泰国大城阿育他耶 ( Thailand Ayutthaya) Si Nakharin Park II

Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park was set up in honour of the late H.R.H Princess Sri
Nagarindra Borommaracha Chonani, the mother of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadey
(Rama IX). The Moken sea nomads in the southern Thai islands still refer to her fondly as Somdet Ya, roughly Royal Grandmother, while Northern hill tribe people called her Mae Fa Luang (Royal Mother of the Sky). She has also been fondly remembered as Princess Mother. She passed away at 1995 .

The garden has been opened by the late HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana at
1985 on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the Princess Mother the same year.

Wat Wang Chai

Wat Wang Chai or the “Chai Palace Monastery” was situated behind one of the many fortresses surrounding the ancient city and guarding the entry of the water gates.

Prince Thianracha, before ascending the throne as King Chakkraphat ( 1548-1569),
had his residence in this area. On ascending the throne and stay in  Grand Palace ,
he ordered his former estate to be transferred into a recitation hall
and had additional an ordination hall built. The temple as such was given the name Wat
Wang Chai, which means “Monastery of the Palace of Victory”.

The area in which this temple ruin is located was before important, as most of the palace
officials and important persons were living on both sides of the Chao Phraya River
between Wat Phutthai Sawan and Wat Chai Watthanaram. There was an important ferry
(Tha Wang Chai) near the monastery linking the city island with the landing at the mouth
of the Takhian canal.

In situ is a large ordination hall with a chedi on its west side in the classical East-West
axis. On its north side stands a vihara with satellite chedis and some other monastic
structures. The whole is surrounded by an outer wall called Kamphaeng Kaeo or Crystal
wall.

The remnants of the main chedi rests on a square platform, while its base is triple
octagonal representing the three worlds or the Trai Phum. The three worlds are: the
sensual worlds, the form world, and the formless world, together forming the Buddhist
cosmology. The octagonal shape of the base stands for the four cardinal and the four
inter-cardinal directions.

Wat Maha Saman or the “Monastery of the Great Schomburgks’ Deer” is located
opposite to Siriyalai palace.

There is a  ordination hall with its entrance to the east. At its West side stands a bell-shaped Thai style chedi. The ubosot was surrounded with an inner wall. The whole monastery was surrounded with a moat.

The temple could be called after the Schomburgks’ Deer , a deer endemic to
Thailand and making reference to the Jataka of the "Deer King",  where Buddha in a
previous life takes the form of a deer being leader of a herd of deer in the
Isipatanamarukatiyawan Forest.

The temple bearing the name "Maha Saman", could also be translated "the rising
morning", referring at the guardian deity of the Theravada Buddhist religion and Sri
Lanka. Sumana Saman invited Lord Buddha to the Samanalakanda and on request
Gautama Buddha left his foot print on the rock at top of the Sri Pada mountain (Adam's
Peak) as a token of symbolic worship 2,580 year ago. Following his death, Prince
Sumana Saman became a god by the name God Maha Sumana Saman. The God Maha
Sumana Saman is depicted crowned and bejeweled, holding a lotus flower in his right
hand while accompanied by a white elephant.

Its historical background and period of construction are unknown.
